I have a friend/almost family member that goes to Purdue, and had the alternator in his A6 bite it this weekend. Supposedly needs alternator, belt and tensioner. Being a college student he doesnt want to bring it to a shop he is going to get screwed at, and would love if he could supply a used alternator to save on cash. I know I know someone is going to say don't drive an Audi if you can't afford the upkeep, but this was gifted to him by a well doer a few years back and is on its last legs with the tranny now. So what have you OPPO, anyone have a shop to recommend or want to make a few extra bucks if you are a shade tree wrench? Thanks in advance. Have a murdered out audi for your time

Why the fuck would you want a used alternator? He's better off getting a reman at Napa. No shop worth going to would install it.
He might want to check out the local Craigslist automotive services section. It's full of people waiting for exactly the kind of job you're describing in the post.

meh just because it is $20 for the used vs $140 from Napa. The tranny has been slipping for a while so it might grenade next week. The $140 isnt bad by any means. It will be $200 by the time any shop orders it and adds on markup. dont need a warranty on the job either, just a car for him to bang around in for the next month

Try Brads Motor Marketplace. A quick google will come up with a #. Ive been using them for years and have never felt like they were taking advantage of me. Most of the cars they work on are locals not student so theyre pretty reasonable on labor.

P.A. Motorsports, just over the bridge in Lafayette. I called around when my parking brake assembly seized over Xmas break and the chain shops I called were super shady with their pricing and estimations, but the owner of P.A. seemed like a real decent dude who knew his stuff. My problem fixed itself so I didn't end up getting any work done there, but that's definitely the place I'd go to if I needed anything done to my car. Apparently a lot of foreign exchange kids take their performance cars there, if that's any indication of workmanship.
